Whether it's summer or winter, you will find heart-pumping sports opportunities here at the two highest ski resorts in the eastern US. If you are here when the snow is on the ground, try your hand at skiing, snowboarding, snowtubing and ice skating! Alternatively, summer holds warmer options, like mountain boarding, and mountain biking.

Distance: 12 Minutes

Next to the Buckeye Lake you will find this multi-million dollar recreation center. Featuring indoor and outdoor tennis, a fitness room, basketball, children's play areas, a comfy lounge with free Wifi, a walking track, horseshoes, soccer, softball, and of course, access to many hiking and biking trails, and fishing at the lake. The center also offers various classes to help better one's self, be it fitness or education.

Distance: 12 Minutes

If you are an animal lover, you would be doing yourself a disservice if you did not visit Genesis during your stay. Nestled in a charming spot next to the Buckeye Lake, the center takes in injured and orphaned wild animals, rehabilitates those than can go back into the wild, and offers a permanent home to those whose injuries were too severe to transition back into their natural habitat. As you walk along their new gravel paths, you get to see an ever shifting menagerie of animals, including wolves, bobcats, raptors, raccoons, and much more. The center is open year round, seven days a week, during daylight hours.

Distance: 20 Minutes

If scenic drives are your cup of tea, you cannot afford to miss a trip along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Only twenty minutes away from Beech Mountain, the National Scenic Byway is over 400 miles long. Experience the Appalachian Mountains the way they were meant to be experienced. You'll have the opportunity to see wildlife away from the hustle and bustle of busier roads, as well as witness the annual changing of the leaves in all it's glory. And the Parkway is more than just a windy road with nice views, there are countless hiking trails, historical demostrations, and horseback riding!

Be you a history buff or theatre aficianado, you shouldn't miss one of the best outdoor theatrical experiences this side of the continental divide. Featuring a fifty character cast, this show is so immersive you'll begin to believe you've travelled back to the old Frontier, fighting the Revolutionary War, braving the wild new world. The ampitheatre was built in 1952, and will truly take you back in time, assuming you are brave to take the plunge.

Distance: 40 Minutes

If your party include children, you have to make a day-trip to Tweetsie! This Wild West adventure features a historical locomotive, offering visitors a chance to go on a ride through the mountain on a train from the 1800's. Among Tweetsie herself, there are lots of activities to engage everyone. Enjoy classic carnival rides in the County Fair, get locked up in Tweetsie Jail, try your luck in the Arcade and Shooting Gallery, and get some souveniers in the numerous shops. And, if you should happen to visit in October, be sure to take a ride on the Ghost Train!

 Blowing RockThe Blowing Rock

The namesake of Blowing Rock the town, this attraction is borne out of the mountain. This mighty cliff stands three thousand feet above the bottom of Johns River Gorge. Read about the legend surrounding the cliff, and the strange phenomena that seems to reverse gravity, blowing snow upward! Take a walk through the beautiful gardens, complete with a waterfall, and relax in the gazebo before stopping in at the gift shop. This one will take your breath away!

Distance: 45 Minutes

Come explore gorgeous caverns full of stalactites, (or is that stalacmites?) streams that still house trout, and maybe even a bat or two! You can feel like a grand explorer in this very safe jaunt into the belly of the earth, with friendly guides to show you the way and explain all the natural spectacles around you. This is one earth-made attraction you will have to see to believe!
